Panagia of Elpida

The Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul of the Catholic Church came to Greece for the first time in 1841, and settled in Santorini. They stayed there for 116 years until 1957 when they served the poor people of the island with various projects.

Four Sisters came to Ano Syros in 1872-1874. Their stay was short due to financial difficulties that did not allow them to properly secure a proper operation of their particular mission in the then rudimentary Workhouse “Agios Panteleimon-Agios Rocco” of the Catholic Church, next to Agios Sevastianos.

They returned to Syros in 1884 and settled in Ermoupolis at the invitation of the then Bishop.

In 1887 Sisters from the Ermoupolis community returned to Ano Syros and with sponsorship from the Catholic Diocese and the French Consulate, the rudimentary workhouse, complete with a new wing, was now operated as a French Hospital until 1952. Thereafter, it operated as a Nursing Home until July 1977.

In Ermoupoli in 1884 they settled in an old house near Agios Nikolaos. They bought 3 old houses near the Catholic Church of Evaggelistria, where they started in the early 1900s, the construction of the Foundation on the present Kalomenopoulou Street, which operated until 1974 as a school, orphanage, boarding school and French language school under the name of “Agios Vikentios”.

In 1975, work began on the building and its conversion to accommodate the 24 elderly people of Ano Syros and several others in July 1977 and it was renamed the “Panagia of Hope” HOSPITAL.

The purpose of the structure is to house, feed and care for our elderly fellow citizens regardless of religion and creed.

The “Panagia tis Elpidos” Retreat House accommodates 35 elderly people aged 80 – 99 years old and employs 24 staff members, of which 15 are elderly care workers, 5 nurses and 10 cabin attendants (caregivers).

We provide social care and primary health care services as well as psychological support to the residents.

We have a physiotherapy room, sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation since 2012, for the needs of the elderly for kinesitherapy, and occupational therapy is also provided to the elderly by the volunteer Sisters.
